A day out on Loch Lomond

Situated half an hour west of Glasgow Loch Lomond is one of the largest lochs in Scotland. Once said to have Walabies living in one of the islands (inchconnachan) it’s steeped in unusual tales. 

If your visiting Glasgow it’s worth a trip on the train from Queen street to Balloch which takes about 45 minutes. If you get off at that stop it’s only a 15 minute walk to Lomond shores. 

Lomond stores has a number of shops including House of Frasers. There are activities such as the bird of prey centre or aquarium for kids. it’s not the biggest aquarium and to be honest there are much more interesting things to do in my opinion. 

A must do is getting out on the Loch. There is a waterbus that can take you to Luss. This pretty village offers nice walks and tearooms. I have taken a speedboat tour out on the Loch from this point before and it was an unforgettable experience. 

I have to say I never truely appreciated the changing weather conditions on the Loch untill I experienced them in that speedboat. Rain, sparkling sun, wind all within 90 minutes. Bring a jacket and go on what you think is a nice summer’s day. I believe you have to book the speed boat trips in advance and that are the pricier option. 

If you find yourself on the island of Inchmurrin your in luck. There is a little pub restaurant just steps away from the pier. Fantastic place to have a coffee and enjoy the view on a sunny day. There is accommodation to stay on the island. interesting fact: there is apparently a naturist camp on the Other side of the island.

There are waterbusses connecting various sites across the Loch. If you fancy a steep hike up conic till and a view of the Loch from above head over to Balmaha. After working up an apetite there is a nice little pub serving food just across the road from the base of the hill.

 

Other water based activities include canooing or stand up paddle boarding. If you have experience with board you can rent various types of boat and take them out on the Loch. This is a deep loch and even strong swimmers with experience on the water have succum so stay safe.

After a day soaking up the fresh air it’s always nice to treat yourself to a nice meal at Cameron house or the boathouse. Sit back relax and watch the geese and swans on the loch.
